8 Gauge XLP USE-2, RHH, RHW-2 Copper Wire

When manufacturing 8 gauge XLP copper wire, specific guidelines such as those laid out in the National Electrical Code have to be followed. However, there are other certain specifications that may only need to be met when the wire is being used for Type USE-2 or when it has specific conductors.

All 8 gauge XLP wire must meet Federal Specification A-A-59544, ICEA S-95-658 (NEMA WC 70) and ASTM B3: Soft or Annealed Copper Wire.

For USE-2, the wire must meet UL Standard 854. For RHH/RHW-2, it needs to meet UL Standard 44.

For wiring that uses stranded conductors, ASTM B8 must be followed. If, on the other hand, the wiring uses a combination of stranded and unilay conductors, it needs to follow ASTM 787 19.

Applications:
Type RHH or RHW-2 or USE-2 conductors are used with conduit as specified in the National Electrical Code. When used as Type USE-2, conductor is suitable for use as underground service entrance cable for direct burial at conductor temperatures not to exceed 90° C. When used as RHH, conductor temperatures shall not exceed 90°C in dry locations. When used as RHW-2 or USE-2, conductor temperatures shall not exceed 90°C in wet or dry locations. Voltage rating for RHH o RHW-2 or USE-2 conductors is 600 volts.

8 gauge XLP copper wire, as specified in the National Electrical Code, in used with conduits. It can be directly buried when used as a Type USE-2 wire. When used as Type USE-2 or Type RHW-2, the conductor temperature should not exceed 90 degrees C in any location (either wet or dry). The same is true when it’s used as a Type RHH conductor, but in this case, it may be used in dry locations only.

This type of wire is made from soft, annealed copper and features either stranded conductors or combination conductors as mentioned. These conductors are protected from sunlight, moisture, damage, and heat by a cross-linked polyethylene insulation. The insulation, which comes in a variety of colors for easy identification, is 60 mls thick. The cable overall has a size of 8 AWG, a stranding of 7, and a complete cable diameter of 262 mils.

The wire’s allowable ampacity depends on the operating temperature of the conductors. At 60 degrees C, the ampacity is 40 amps. At 75 degrees C, it’s 50 amps. At 90 degrees C, it increases slightly to 55 amps. The wire is rated for use at 600 volts and weighs 72 pounds per 1,000 feet.

Construction:
